Applications
are now open for PULSE Fringe Festival 2010 and application forms can be
downloaded from www.pulsefringe.com
PULSE 10 will run from 29 May to 13 June 2010 at multiple venues in and
around
Ipswich
including New Wolsey Theatre, New Wolsey Studio and Sir John Mills
Theatre.
PULSE is a multi-disciplinary festival focusing on new and innovative
approaches to the arts and new/emerging companies. The Festival provides
a platform for the development and presentation of new work by regional,
British and international artists of vision, nurturing artistic ambition
and excellence across a range of art forms including theatre, dance,
comedy, music, event led visual arts, participatory theatre, physical
theatre and circus led work.
PULSE programmes work at all stages of development, from rehearsed
readings to tour-ready, and in 2009 featured numerous shows en route to
the Edinburgh Festival Fringe including The World’s Wife by Linda
Marlowe, Horse by Company FZ, King of the Gypsies by These Colours, The
Great Escape by Helix Dance, Oh! What a Sh*tty War by Axis of Evil and
Sh*tty Deal Puppet Theatre and Sound Journey by Adriano Adewale.
PULSE 09 achieved an unprecedented 82% occupancy over a 2 week period
with 39 events. Highlights included No. 5 by Gecko Theatre Company, now
a New Wolsey Theatre Associate Company, Paperweight by Top of the World,
Bully by Theatre Tours International and The Caravan from Look Left Look
Right, all hits at the Edinburgh Festival in 2008.
“PULSE 09 was tremendous with full houses for most shows and extremely
responsive audiences,” says Festival Director Stephen Freeman.
“PULSE has firmly established its position on the cultural calendar
locally and nationally and is generating profile and audiences from far
beyond the immediate geographic area. I’m sure PULSE 10 will be even
bigger and I look forward to programming another diverse and challenging
festival.”
Stephen is keen to see applications which promote cultural diversity,
disability led work, gay led word, contemporary writing/production
styles, site specific work, multi-disciplinary and/or cross genre
artists working in collaboration, work that promotes new ways of
engaging its audience or aims to give the audience a unique experience
and work which takes risks, pushes boundaries and challenges
conventions.
PULSE is supported by Escalator, an Arts Council England, East
initiative which aims to identify, nurture and develop artistic talent
in the East. PULSE 09 presented work by 6 Escalator supported companies
and Stephen, who is on the Escalator selection panel, will encourage all
participants to apply for PULSE 10.
However Stephen is keen to point out that the application process is
open to anyone who meets the festival’s criteria. “We may encourage
people to apply but every application is judged on its own merits. This
ensures that the process is entirely fair and maximises the possibility
for new companies and artists to secure participation.”
